These Days

It’s just one of those days.

It’s just one of those days when words like
hope and faith
sting like holy water on a demon’s forehead,
and you wonder if you could be so lucky
to be blessed with the absoluteness of a win-win or
a lose-lose,
just so you could rest knowing.

It’s just one of those days –
one where you lick your wounds just a little
longer than necessary so predators think
that annoying soul of yours is ripe for the picking
so you can be just like them –

but wait, the only difference is that you’re pretending, and you wonder
if maybe they are too.

It’s just one of those days
when Tyler lets you sleep through the night, alone,
for the first time in months
just so he can wake you up early, saying:

“Hey. Can we talk?”

It’s one of those days when you wonder:
if politicians are failed lawyers,
are professors the only truly successful ones?
Do you need to get a running start
before you reach for the stars?
The sky’s the limit, sure,
but are there prerequisites?

It’s just one of those days
when you smirk at sayings like “those days,”
and how beautifully convenient they are in communicating
a lack of desire to communicate.

It’s one of those days where you
want so desperately to see, but are too petrified to look.
Where you want to hear, but you’re terrified to listen.
Where you want to sleep, but you’re afraid to dream
anymore.

It’s one of those days when
you know all of this is temporary
and that everything happens for a reason
and that everything is going to be okay,

you’re just not ready to accept it yet.
